Re: 2 Questions: Challenges and CLEP

Below is the credit by challenge policy here at Carroll – so we’re more of the nominal fee type. This option is used very rarely.

For CLEP credits we award “P” grades as well.

Credit by Challenge Examination

Upon application to the Registrar and approval by the appropriate faculty member, examinations for credit in courses offered by the College may be taken with the following restrictions:

1. The student must be currently enrolled as a degree candidate at Carroll College;

2. A challenge credit examination may not be taken in a course in which the student has already been registered (for credit or as an auditor), nor may an advanced credit examination be repeated;

3. The maximum number of credits obtainable by challenge examination is 18, not to exceed six (6) credits in any semester; and

4. A fee of $35 is charged for each examination administered under this program.

The fee is payable in advance and is used to defray the cost of the special examination.

Good morning,

This question always gives me pause when responding to a larger audience.  J

·         The method you describe for Tech is policy for our 2 year City College campus.

·         On the University campus, we do have a mix and the other method (testing ahead of time) is one of those.  We work with students to ensure departmental challenge credits fall in the flat spot – occasionally this doesn’t work, but most of the time it does.

·         CLEP is P/NP here – no letter grades

Hi Everyone!  I hope that you had a lovely 4th!

Can you tell me how your campus handles challenges?  Tech enrolls students in the class and they pay tuition for those credits.  Then they take the challenge exam.  If they pass, they get the credit and a grade for the class and don’t have to attend the rest of the semester.  If they fail, the remain in the class.  It came to my attention that most of the other campuses conduct challenge exams before classes start and students are charged only a small fee.  Is this correct?

Also, do you assign grades for CLEP exams and if so, what formula do you use?
