Subject: Update on PLA Draft Policy and PLA Council Concept

 

Dear PLA Taskforce Members:

 

1.      During our last PLA Taskforce meeting we made tremendous progress and, as a result, our Draft Policy Recommendations are looking good.  As you all know, we delayed presenting the final PLA policy to the Board of Regents last week as we found that there was still an expressed need for further engagement and input.  The input deadline is now July 15, 2015.  This puts us in a situation of reconvening the PLA Taskforce one additional time (July 24) to review that input.  We have a choice â€" we can do this in person or via conference call.  Our ultimate goal is to seek Taskforce approval of a Final Draft â€" at that point, the work of the Taskforce will be complete.

 

·        Follow Up â€" If you have a preference as to whether we meet in person or via conference call, please let me know no later than June 4.

 

2.      In our draft PLA Policy document, we all agreed that a PLA Council will be appointed for reviewing PLA data at the institutional and state levels to determine trends, student academic outcomes and policy efficacy.  Also, during our previous taskforce meeting, we brainstormed on which positions should be represented on the Council.  I have created a model of what the PLA Council would look like and modified based on input from Deputy Commissioner Cech and Dr. Neil Moisey.

 

·        Follow Up â€" I welcome your input on this model.  Please send me your feedback no later than June 4.

This is a gentle reminder that the input on the current PLA Policy draft is due to me by next Wednesday, July 15, 2015.  I have received very little input but I  do have approximately 12 items that we will cover that were not debated/resolved previously.

 

If you know of anyone who was planning to make recommendations or suggestions, please have them use mark up on this document and return to me by the due date.

 

FYI:  Two of our Taskforce members have retired:  Lou Laakso and Bruce Gottwig.
