FW: [!!Mass Mail]FW: General Associate's Degree

After thinking about this some more, I don’t think my original question was worded very well.   Could we repost this?

Thank you for your responses!  Our question is about a name change only, without changing our suggested courses of study for transfer.  FVCC works closely with the transfer schools to prepare students for transfer in specific disciplines.  Our transfer programs list the courses required to prepare students to enter a particular Bachelor’s program as a junior.  For example, if a student follows the Biology transfer to MSU curriculum, their transcript would include the courses listed on that page.  Our question is, if there were two identical transcripts (that looked like the biology transfer, for example) and one said “Associate Degree” and the other “Associate of Science Degree,” would the name of the degree make a difference in how the student is admitted?

Common course numbering should have established course equivalencies for transfer, so we are wondering if a degree name change would pose any challenges for our transfer students.

Thanks again for taking the time to consider this!

I concur that an AS would be necessary for our BS programs at Montana Tech.

Dena,

I’ve never started the list serve for MACRAO before but would like to send out the email below to the members of MACRAO to get their feedback on what we are purposing.  Can you help me get this out?

Thanks so much,

There has been some preliminary discussion at FVCC about offering just one general Associate’s Degree, rather than both the Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees that we currently offer.  We would like some initial feedback about whether or not transfer students would be at any disadvantage by holding a general associate degree versus an AA or AS.

The benefits to offering just one Associate’s Degree include simplifying graduation requirements, streamlining the General Education curriculum, providing more flexibility in students’ schedules, and facilitating graduation in some programs.  Would you please help us identify any disadvantages that might exist for students if we offered just one general Associate’s Degree?

Thank you!
