Hello all,
· MSU-Bozeman requires each faculty to enter final grades via self-service Banner, using his/her authenticated log-on. We do not require ‘hard copies’ of those grade rosters, however many faculty and/or departments retain a copy for their records. Grades entered through self-service are ‘held’ in a Banner table, and until we initiate a process/Banner job, do not actually roll to history (and reflect on a student’s transcript). We do not review individual grades, however we have multiple reports to check for missing grades and other anomalies that require attention. Once all grades are finalized and rolled to academic history, we initiate & run reports to check for repeats & calculate GPAs to assign academic standing.
· We have a few courses (i.e. independent study, graduate thesis, etc) which include more than one instructor on a Grade Roster; on these we do accept a paper version of a Final Grade Roster with faculty signatures, so that our staff can manually enter those grades – Note: we manually enter very few grades however, since each of these rosters include only a few students.
· During our faculty’s transition and training to enter grades via Banner self-service, we had the support of the Provost’s office so that the ‘procedural change’ carried additional political clout to our deans & dept heads. Additionally our staff went to extreme lengths to be helpful! In addition to numerous training sessions across campus, we offered to give any department individual training or help sessions, and for those final hold-out faculty, we invited them to come to our office for personal assistance (some of our senior faculty thought that meant we would enter the grades for them, however we just provided a work-space with computer access in the midst of our busy office, helped the faculty log-on and get started, and were nearby if they needed help). Even the most reluctant faculty realized that the entire process was relatively simple once a few navigation tricks were learned (i.e. SAVE OFTEN especially on large Grade Rosters), and found the new procedures were actually more convenient.
Good luck!

Subject: Grading Question
Two questions –
1) How many require faculty to submit grades on line?
2) If faculty submit grades on line do they submit them directly to the students’ transcripts or are the grades submitted to the registrar’s office to be verified then placed on the transcript?
Thanks for any/all input!
