Re: C- Grades and Repeat Policy Questions

FVCC is pretty much the same as Montana Tech with a few exceptions:

--A C- works for most prereqs, but we do have a few courses that require higher than a C- grade.

--We do not have a limit on how many times a student can repeat a course, but unless the course description states it is repeatable for “x” amount of credits, the most recent grade stands unless it is a W, WI, AU, or I grade.

At Montana Tech we:

·        Moved the cutoff to C- when we added the +/- grade scheme.  So, courses with a C- or better count toward graduation, passing for pre-reqs, etc.  Essentially we moved the C cut-off to a C-.

·        We transfer classes with a C- or better.

·        Students can repeat any class, regardless of the grade.

·        The most recent grade stands when a course is repeated.

·        That does not apply to W grades.  So, if a student gets a D and then a W, the D stands.

·        We only allow a student to repeat a class 3 times.

·        Students do earn a worse grade on occasion, maybe about 20% of the time.

Good luck!

Hello MACRAO Friends,

Unfortunately, I will not be able to join you in Billings this spring, but I had a few questions and was hoping to hear from some other institutions about what they do regarding the following --

C- Grades

We are converting to a +/- grade scheme (fun stuff!) and are trying to figure out what to do with our C- grades. A number of our departments require students to have a C or better in courses for either prerequisite or major requirement reasons. We’re now debating whether a C- should count as meeting those requirements.

·        How many of you allow a C- to count toward “C or better” prerequisite or major requirements?

·        How many of you allow a straight C (2.0) and nothing lower to count in these situations?

o   In this case, are students allowed to repeat courses where they earned a C- under your repeat policy?

o   Do you transfer in courses with C- grades?

Repeat Policy

We currently allow students to repeat classes with D or F grades, and the most recent grade is the one used. As mentioned, we are converting to a new grade scheme and are thus looking again at the pros and cons of this policy.

·        How many of you have a repeat policy where the most recent grade is the one used in the credit count and GPA?

o   What do you do when a student repeats a course but then withdraws?

o   For example, a student takes a class and gets a D the first time, then takes it again but ends up with a W – do you go back and restore the credits and GPA points from the D, or do you leave it alone and let the W stand?

·        How many of you have a repeat policy where the best grade is the one used in the credit count and GPA?

o   How often to students repeat the course and do worse? (e.g. D to an F)

Thanks so much for your input!

Best,

Cassie
