Re: Accreditation of Private High Schools

I confirmed with Becky Roeder, that policy & procedure here at MSU is the same that Lou describes in the email below, for MT and out-of-state state high schools not accredited by the respective states’ Board of Education.

We follow BOR Regents Policy 301 that states “students must have graduated from a high school accredited by the state accrediting agency (OPI) or have earned a GED.   For students who complete their education by home schooling or at unaccredited schools, this requirement may be met by satisfactory performance on the ACT, SAT or a recognized testing instrument…”

Schools may have a regional accreditation but if they have not submitted their college prep curriculum to OPI, we consider these schools as non-accredited   For out-of-state schools, we check to see if they are recognized by the appropriate state board of education.

Good morning,

I am wondering if schools are accepting Montana private high schools that are accredited through NWAC, but not through OPI, as accredited high schools.

If you are not, would accept an out of state private high school with this accreditation as an accredited high school? Also since Ability to Benefit no longer applies for financial aid, what are you telling these students?

I am curious what the consensus is and how schools are handling the change in the financial aid rules.

Thanks,

Sarah Dellwo, Director of Admissions and Records
