Charity,
We gave some serious thought to our mission/vison and values a couple of years ago. I think they are still relevant today. These don’t really get at “strategic planning” but I think you need to have mission/vision/values as a platform from which to build an effective actionable relevant strategic plan (which we haven’t done at this point, but it is probably a good idea for us as well)
Our mission and core values can be found on our website: http://www.montana.edu/registrar/
I think the PLA and alternative credentialing (certificates, badges, etc…) are going to continue to fundamentally change what we do in offices of the registrar.
I think coordination with advising is a particularly big issue at MSU (others may be further along than we are)
Degree planning/mapping: reducing time to degree is national, state, and local priority that challenges many of our norms and rituals
I think the biggest technological issue is collecting student data (academic, demographic, behavioral) and distilling that into digestible/actionable information for advisors and other university personal as a means to increase persistence and graduation is the biggest data challenge.

Subject: A pondering question--the future of the registrar's office
I’m beginning to mentally draft the registrar office strategic plan for the next five years and wanted to collect some philosophical insight from my colleagues. So here we go…
- What do you think will be the issues we as registrar offices need to prepare for in the coming years?
- In your opinion what technologies will be key to integrate into practices?
- What changes in student demographics and/or student concerns will most likely effect policy and procedure development?
While I have a few ideas forming, I’m still processing this thought and will be for a while. However I wanted to get the dialogue going to see if anyone else out there in MACRAO land had thought about this recently.
Don’t mentally hit me upside the head friends J…I recognize I’m asking a deep thought question on Friday afternoon at 3:30 PM….but hey you have to use the momentum the thought occurs. J
Hope you all have a good and restful weekend!
