I’ve dealt with a similar scenario with the BS Education cross over to 5th year program at my previous University. A 500 level was never required but a student could take up to 9 credits of 500 level courses in their senior year towards their Bachelor degree and use it as credits towards their fifth year program. However there was typically a 400-level version of the course cross-listed with the 500 level for those students who needed it in their bachelor degree but were not yet ready for fifth year TEP requirements.
I agree with Cheri. The word “required” causes me to pause as well. I haven’t dealt with a scenario where it was the only option and not cross listed between a 400 and 500.

Interesting. I haven’t seen this, but recognize the veracity of the situations Cheri describes. I would think that if the course is not part of the grad/undergrad specific degree program that I would suggest having a course recognized as both 4xx an 5xx that is co-convened.

TGIF.
Initially I was stuck on the word “required”… however, we are starting to see more and more 3+2; 3+3 kinds of undergrad/grad degrees where the last year of UG is the first year of the GR degree and in those there are certainly 5xx courses that are required and the grad committee has approved. We also see classes that are taught in a combined 4xx/5xx course where the 5xx has additional requirements. And, in times of diminishing resources, I wouldn’t be surprised to see additional solutions of this nature.

Hi All,
What are your thoughts on requiring a 5XX level course for an undergraduate degree? Does that fly?
