Interesting. I haven’t seen this, but recognize the veracity of the situations Cheri describes. I would think that if the course is not part of the grad/undergrad specific degree program that I would suggest having a course recognized as both 4xx an 5xx that is co-convened.

Initially I was stuck on the word “required”… however, we are starting to see more and more 3+2; 3+3 kinds of undergrad/grad degrees where the last year of UG is the first year of the GR degree and in those there are certainly 5xx courses that are required and the grad committee has approved. We also see classes that are taught in a combined 4xx/5xx course where the 5xx has additional requirements. And, in times of diminishing resources, I wouldn’t be surprised to see additional solutions of this nature.
