FW: Updated PLA Final DRAFT Guidelines

 

The PLA Taskforce met on April 13 to review input received from a number of MUS constituents from December 15, 2014 through March 27, 2015.  Many of the recommendations were implemented and others discussed or tabled.  The changes that were made are reflected in this latest rendition of the DRAFT Prior Learning Assessment Policy Recommendations.  http://mus.edu/2yr/pla/MT-policy-Final-DRAFT-4-21-15.pdf

 

We expect that during the summer a PLA Council will be appointed which will oversee ongoing PLA implementation.  Several of the suggestions that were tabled will later be addressed by the PLA Council as implementation items.

 

Board of Regents action on the DRAFT PLA Policy Recommendations has been deferred from May to the September meeting.  We have determined that more time is necessary to allow continued and broader engagement of MUS faculty and staff. 

 

From now through July 17, 2015, please make sure your campus has sufficient time to review the guidelines.  Input may be submitted in writing to your campus PLA Taskforce contact person or me at sjones@montana.edu .  It is very helpful to cite the page and section of the DRAFT Policy Recommendations when making comments.

A few of our departments offer honors recognition as well, but the departments handle their processes. We just keep a list of who to reference should a student have a questions about departmental recognitions.

To date, Carroll has required students to complete an honors thesis to receive Latin honors. However, this spring our faculty voted in a new policy, which will be effective starting Fall 2016. Here's how it will read in the catalog --

Graduation with Honors (Effective August 1, 2016)

To be eligible for graduation honors, a student must graduate with a cumulative grade point average of not less than 3.50. Honors are awarded at three levels:
. Summa Cum Laude-meaning "with the highest praise" is the highest distinction awarded at graduation. To graduate summa cum laude, a student must achieve a 3.90 or higher grade point average.
. Magna Cum Laude-meaning "with great praise" is the second highest distinction awarded at graduation. To qualify for magna cum laude, a student must achieve a 3.70-3.89 grade point average.
. Cum Laude-meaning "with praise" is the third distinction awarded at graduation. To qualify for cum laude, a student must achieve a 3.50-3.69 grade point average.

These honors are announced at Commencement.

Transfers: To be eligible for graduation with honors, a student must have completed 60 semester hours of course work at Carroll College. The required cumulative average will be calculated from all courses attempted at Carroll.


Graduation with Distinction (Effective August 1, 2016)

To be eligible for graduation with distinction, a student must successfully complete the senior thesis with a grade of "B" (3.0) or higher and must graduate with a cumulative grade point average of not less than 3.25.

These honors are announced at Commencement.

The purpose of noting it on the transmittal is to alert the receiving campus if the student has complete the requirement yet. If the student is transferring and hasn't completed the requirement, it would be the responsibility of the receiving campus to have them complete the requirement.

Re: Grade for never attending?

UM-Missoula issues an NF. It is called an "administrative fail". Colloquially it has been referred to as a "never attended fail". It does affect the student's GPA. If the student pays a $10 fee we can change the NF to a W. We used to let them pay the $10 and have it removed from their record. Eep!

We use a “NS” (No Show) code built into STVESTS/SFAESTS.  With this the student’s tuition/fees are at 100% refund and they get a “W” grade. 

 

With some of our instructors, we don’t find this out until final grades are due.  Been there…..

We also work with faculty to report early to report on attendance, but we do not have an administrative withdrawal in place. We have seen a reduction in the use of the NF because we do work with the students to get to them dropped if they are reported as not attending.
