Here is Montana Tech’s policy. Students can withdraw with advisor and instructor signature through the 50th day.
Change of Enrollment - Adds/Drops/Withdrawal from College
All changes of enrollment (adding a class, dropping a class or withdrawing from college) must be recorded with the Enrollment Services Office. If such changes are not recorded with the Enrollment Services Office, the student will receive F grades in those courses. Students may add courses through the 10th instructional day with the approval of the instructor and their academic advisor. Students may also drop courses during the first 15 days of class and such withdrawals will not appear on their transcript. Students may withdraw from any class after the 15th day and through the 50th day of classes and receive an automatic “W” in the subject. References to the 10th, 15th and 50th instructional day refer to a traditional 75-instructional-day semester. A shorter but equivalent timeline is used for shorter instructional terms (summer school and short courses). Students are responsible for fee payment for even a partial term of attendance, and should refer to the refund policy in this catalog or the Class Schedule.
Active duty military personnel who are called to action while enrolled should contact their SCO immediately for assistance. Each instance will be managed on a case by case basis with the intent of ensuring the most beneficial outcome for the student.
Withdrawal from Individual Classes Through the 50th Instructional Day
If a student drops a course through the 15th day of instruction, the class does not appear on the student’s transcript. A student who withdraws from a class from the 16th through the 50th instructional day will automatically receive a grade of W (withdrawal) in that class. Thereafter, through the last instructional day of a semester, a grade of F will be assigned in all courses from which the student withdraws, unless it is determined that the withdrawal is for “extraordinary reasons.”
Withdrawal From All Classes Through the 50th Instructional Day
A student may request complete withdrawal from all classes by obtaining and completing a Request for Complete Withdrawal From College form, available at the Enrollment Services Office. If a student withdraws from all classes by the 15th day of classes, the term of attendance does not appear on the student’s transcript. If a student withdraws from all classes from the 16th through the 50th day of classes, he or she will automatically receive a grade of W in all enrolled classes. Thereafter, through the last instructional day of a semester, a grade of F will be assigned in all courses from which the student withdraws, unless it is determined that the withdrawal is for “extraordinary reasons” (see below). Complete withdrawal through the 50th instructional day requires clearance from the following:
1. Financial Aid Officer
2. Dean of Students
3. Business Services
4.
Complete or Partial Withdrawal for Extraordinary Reasons (After the 50th Instructional Day)
A student may request withdrawal from a portion of, or his or her entire academic course load after the 50th instructional day by obtaining and completing the Complete or Partial Withdrawal for Extraordinary Reasons form. Extraordinary reasons may include extended illness or hospitalization documented by doctor’s excuse or job transfer documented by employer. If it is determined that extraordinary reasons exist, the student will receive a grade of W in those courses from which he or she has requested withdrawal. Withdrawals for extraordinary reasons are only granted through the final day of the semester. After that point, a student must appeal to the Academic Standards committee for a retroactive withdrawal.
Determination of extraordinary reasons for withdrawal requires:
1. Completion and submission of the Complete or Partial Withdrawal for Extraordinary Reasons form to the Enrollment Services Office, along with documentation of the extraordinary reasons.
2. Withdrawals require signatures of approval from the following offices.
a. Financial Aid
b. Dean of Students
c. Business Services

Subject: Re: Course Drop Deadline
Our policy is below. Essentially, students can withdraw with advisor and instructor signature throught the 60th day of class. From 60th to 70th (Friday before finals) they can drop for extraordinary reasons and Dean’s signature. Once finals start, they need to complete the equivalent of a retroactive withdrawal – which means they generally have to drop from all classes for extraordinary reasons. Part of the rationale for this policy is to ensure students aren’t able to withdraw just because they got a poor grade on their final.
Drop/Add Regulations and Procedures
Students may add classes online using MyInfo through the 5th day of the semester. After the 5th semester day, all adds require the instructor's and the advisor's signatures on an Add/Drop form. After the 10th semester day, all adds require the additional signature of the Assistant Dean of the student’s major curriculum on an Drop/Add form.
Students may drop classes online using MyInfo through the 10th day of the semester. After the 10th semester day, all drops require the instructor's and the advisor's approval communicated through signatures on an Add/Drop form. Between the 15th and 60th semester days, students may continue to drop courses, with the approval of the instructor and of the advisor, though the student will receive a "W" (withdrawn) grade.
Drop for Extraordinary Reasons
From the 60th day of the semester through the 70th class day (generally Friday before finals), students may only drop for extraordinary reasons. To complete this process the student is required to document the extraordinary reasons submit that documentation along with an advisor and instructor approved (signed) Add/Drop form to the Dean of the College of their primary degree. Upon review, approval, and signature of the Dean the form must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar for processing.
Drop/Add (courses with alternative start/stop dates)
Courses within a specialized part of term follow the drop/add calendar specific to that part of term. Students registered in courses with multiple parts of term or in courses that fall outside a specified part of term will follow the drop/add calendar for the "full semester." However, students are not allowed to drop any course after the final scheduled day (including exams) for any course.
Add/Drop forms are available online or through the Office of the Registrar. If the student has confirmed attendance or paid fees and wishes to drop all courses, a University Withdrawal must be obtained through the Office of Student Success. Graduate students seeking a complete withdrawal must contact The Graduate School. Each student is responsible for fees upon registration. Contact the Student Accounts Office for partial-refund dates.

Subject: Course Drop Deadline
Hi MACRAO crew,
I’m gathering info on other school’s final drop deadlines, which approvals are required, and what appears on the transcript.
For instance, UM’s final course drop deadline is the last day of instruction – May 1, 2020 for this spring – and requires instructor, advisor, and Dean permissions. A WP (withdrawn while passing) or WF (withdrawn while failing) appears on the transcript. We have earlier deadlines where fewer permissions are required, but this is the last opportunity outlined in our policy.
Could you take a moment and let me know what your school’s policy is for the final drop deadline?
Thanks in advance for your help and I hope your spring terms are all off to a great start!
