Re: FERPA Training materials

For what it is worth, the MACRAO board is looking to help bring LeRoy Rooker to Montana in the spring to speak on FERPA (hopefully at several venues in the course of a week).  At MSU, we were hoping to use that as a "kick off" to a re-focus or FERPA efforts and perhaps launch a new standard of FERPA training.

 

AACRAO has a FERPA-training module that we reviewed a couple years ago.  We have tentative approval to make some sort of online training mandatory  for new employees and perhaps on a two or three year cycle for continuing employees.  We were looking at hosting this in banner self-serve much like the conflict of interest forms and such.

 

We looked at offering this through our Brightspace (our online learning platform) but our contract is specifically for students and using brightspace for faculty and or staff is outside its intended scope.

 

We are definitely interested in partnering with folks across and around the state in developing some standards of practice.

Hi Charity,

 

We have been talking about doing something similar! Currently we only hold our new employee orientation once a year, but we definitely have employees who start at various other points in the year who need FERPA training right away. I have volunteered to do a video recording of my training session to post on Moodle with some other new employee resources, but I haven't actually done it yet. In the meantime, here's the PowerPoint I typically use (though I'd like to revise parts of it), plus the handouts I distribute (again, which could probably use some revision), in case any of this is helpful to you. I would definitely be interested in your final product!
