Northern has had similar situations arise from instructors and coaches, e.g. return of athletic gear/uniforms, return of cameras (from photography class). When the property is not returned or is damaged, the hold is then assigned a replacement cost which is then billed to the student’s account. This can be reversed if the property is returned in acceptable condition. Of course, this only applies if the loaned item is school property.
If your instructor loaned a personal book to a student, then that should be between the two involved, I think. However, I have seen instructors withhold grades for a student when their personal books don’t get returned.

Subject: FW: Records hold question
Dena:
Could you please forward this to the MACRAO listserve.
We have a records hold question. One of our faculty loaned a book to a student. Upon return, the book was not in the same condition when it was loaned out. We are now being requested to put a hold on the student until the book has been replaced.
This is a first for me. I place holds on students but for Student Services or Financial Aid reasons.
Have any of you had this type of request before? Does this become a Student Services issue or should this be between the instructor and the student?
Thank you for your input.
