Re: Course Number "Reuse"

The reuse of a number can also cause havoc if you are using pre-requisite checking in BANNER, because that is only looking at the name and number.

If we are going to reuse numbers, I think we should use 15 years. Since general education coursework is not considered “outdated” until 15 years (Policy 301.5.2) it seems like that might ease some confusion. Unfortunately, I think we might run out of numbers in some areas and I am a not sure there is a clean solution to that. I know we have some subject codes that have had to already because of this problem and that is not a terribly easy process either.

GFC MSU practice is more like FVCC listed below and I’m a bit concerned with so many of us using DegreeWorks (DW) , that it looks at the prefix and number and not the name or credits. By reusing prefixes/numbers you have the potential of getting a student sideways at graduation if you are reusing prefixes/numbers and just renaming classes/ changing outcomes/changing course credits whether you hand audit, DW or other software. Does DW have best practice for this situation? ~d

While FVCC can also maintain the historical data in our students’ records and catalog years, it has been our practice to never re-use a course number. In addition to the reasons listed in Cheri’s email, a deactivated course number on our campus has from time-to-time gained new life and has been brought back…..Due to CCN’ing, I understand some of our processes may need to be re-evaluated. So, if this is the path we are heading, my preference would be a 10 year minimum, if not longer.

At MSUB, my preference is never. If we have to, I would like a 10 year minimum because love it or hate it… many of our students take 6+ years to finish a bachelor’s degree and reuse of anything has been challenging at best, especially with repeats and loss of credits toward graduation totals etc….

Hello,

We try to use a 10-year-before-reuse practice. Generally, we are able to sustain even greater lengths of time in between. However, this recent CCN of M 105Q (used to be M 145Q on our campus, and we had a MATH 105 in 2008) is less than ideal and stretches us a little bit .

That said, changing the titles and credits of a course without changing rubric is not something I would want to deal with. Did they need to keep it the same for CCN? Otherwise, I would have recommended changing it.

At UM, we use a ten year policy now. It seems to be the minimum length from all best practices I have seen.

It is my pleasure to introduce myself to our MACRAO membership as this year's president. I am glad to serve and I am very excited for what this year has in store.

A quick introduction… My name is Kristi Peterson and I have been the Director of Admissions and Recruitment at MSU-Northern for the past three years. Originally from Malta, Montana, it has been fun to be back up on the Hi-Line revisiting my old stomping grounds. Organizations like MACRAO and MPSEOC have been integral in helping me understand the climate of higher education in Montana and introducing me to a network of colleagues who work together to serve our students. During an inspired moment at the 2015 Spring MACRAO meeting, I think I may have nominated myself to be a MACRAO officer (no joke). And here I am!

I'd like to thank Montana Tech and Leslie Dickerson for hosting our meeting last week in Butte, America. As always, it was fun to reconnect with everyone and drill down on the topics that are priorities for most, if not all of us. As I walked out of the meeting, a little birdie (Jerri) talked to me about a few opportunities we have to enhance our meetings for fall and spring. Very Exciting! So, hold on to your hats, folks! Things are going to ramp up for MACRAO!

With that, I embark on the next 12 months feeling encouraged by and hopeful for the many things we can achieve in 2016-2017. Thank you for the opportunity!

Re: NSC Reporters

The FVCC Admissions and Registration Office is currently in a transition stage with some of the staff retiring in June—one of which is the person submitting these reports. L If this discussion takes place before June 15, Lorraine Springer (current NSC reporter) will still be available to join in. Amy Kanewischer (you met this lovely lady at MACRAO), will be working with Lorraine between now and June to learn the ins and outs of the Clearinghouse reporting process for our campus. If the opportunity becomes available, I’m sure she would also greatly appreciate and welcome any chance available to learn from all of you.
