Re: GED college credit scores

Also, if I'm reading it right, the ACE recommendations appear to recommend only remedial credit for GED scores- or that the GED courses be used as pre-reqs for college-level courses.

At BCC, students prepare for the GED under three different programs outside of BCC, and we do not count this prep time as credit. BCC does not have Ability to Benefit.

Re: Early high school grads

Great Falls allows them to enroll for one semester with their current high school transcript and a letter from their guidance counselor confirming that they’re on track to graduate. We slap on a registration hold for their second semester until their final high school transcript comes in. We do the same for high school seniors enrolling for summer classes, since GFPS graduation is typically after our summer term starts.

We also communicate to these students that they won’t be eligible for Financial Aid until after their high school graduation. This means they’ll have to float the cost out of pocket up front until we get a final high school transcript and Financial Aid kicks in. This tidbit of information usually isn’t on their radar and can change their decision of when to start college.

Dawn Barnhart, provided the excellent details below on what we do at UM and how we have modified it more recently.

For students who are participating in exchange program to another country or our students exchanging on NSE Plan B (pay back home) and need their aid to disburse at UM, they register for 12 dummy credits in a unique CRN created each semester. Since these programs require students to be attending fulltime, we decided on 12 credits, even though students could transfer back more than 12 credits. This is strictly to get their tuition and fees posted at fulltime and financial aid to disburse. I believe this also puts them on our NSC enrollment reports so their loans will continue to be deferred.

In the past, we got lists from the International office and we enrolled the students, but it was a pain because we constantly had to monitor who had accepted/declined their insurance and cleared holds before we could register them. Last year, we experimented with the NSE students by having them register themselves. Our NSE coordinator, Cheryl Minnick, issues the electronic overrides then emails these students with the NSE Outgoing Exchange CRN and they proceed through registration in self-service as they are used to doing for regular semesters. It worked well, so we are pushing that model for the International Outgoing Exchange folks – a much larger population.

What rubric do you use for Study Abroad ?

Good afternoon –

Can you please share with me, when students study abroad, what rubric you are using for registration/transcripts if it is a block registration; or not a specific rubric that you offer ?

Ie. SPNS, FRCH, GRMN, don’t appear to make sense if the student is going to China

· Attached is a document outlining our standard start/end times for fall 2018

· Below is the information sent out to campus about coding of classes at the both the section level as well as the in the defined part of terms in banner.

As the faculty are scheduling classes, it will be very important that they are clear as to which block the course will be in – full term, 1^st 8 week, 2^nd 8 week or OTHER

If there is a course that is running shorter than the dates listed below (only 1 weekend, couple of days/week/etc.) then we will build it with those specific dates in a different part of term for Fall 2018, like we do now. Over time, our hope is that these exceptions become fewer in number.

Fall 2018 Semester - Starts August 27 and ends December 14.

16 week runs August 27, end December 14.

1^st 8 week Part of Term to Start 8/27, end 10/21 (Sunday end important for VA proration).

2^nd 8 week Part of Term to Start 10/22, end 12/14.

We also proposing the following section classifications in order to quickly find courses in these different parts of the term (blocks).
