ACT date of birth errors

Good afternoon!

We’re finding many instances where ACT scores report a person’s date of birth as something different from either (a) a pre-existing Banner record or (b) another admission document from the same person. After reaching out to the ACT folks about this, it appears they’re aware this is a possible issue for places that do state-sponsored testing. This is because Montana juniors who take the test at school don’t pre-register for the test online (where there’s data validation) and instead fill in the ovals for Scantron OG (which introduces more opportunities for mis-reporting and mis-reading).

This is stressing out my office staff, who have fuzzy name/address matches but no DOB match and now they’re facing The Tough Call to either duplicate or match records (which would mean arbitrarily picking one DOB as “correct”). If these were applicants, I’d just match records and slap a registration hold on them until they provide something to verify DOB. But at the point where we’re getting ACT scores, they’re mostly just prospects and I have no teeth to track down verification – which means connecting these scores to the right person when they apply later becomes difficult.

Is anyone else finding this to be an issue? Do you have any ideas on what best practice might be to resolve this?

Thanks a bunch!
