Hey Sharon,
I handle a giant chunk of the data requests that come in for current students and we only get a handful of third-party requests. We get the information out for the Military groups without any issue.
For all non-military, non-campus groups: I request an explanation of what the data is going to be used for, a written statement that they won't be sending off the data to other third-parties, that all they need is data that's readily available through our directory system, and make sure that we pull all students out with a confidentiality hold. If they're campus affiliated (but not a direct part of MSU), I usually just request an email from their supervisor with what the data is used for. It's still very much on a case-by-case basis, but that seems like the route to go with how few requests that we get.

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some guidance on how your campus handles outside agencies requesting student directories? Do you provide a list, is there a charge, information provided, best practice, etc.? At this time, FVCC provides directory information only on a case-by-case basis for a specific student provided it is information listed in our catalog as directory information and the student does not have a FERPA hold.
Exception: Directory lists of enrolled students within a specific age group are provided to the Military after the third week of each semester (Solomon Amendment).
