Welcome back MACRAO… it appears I missed the message that kicked this off; and perhaps some others in the past few days so I apologize for going dormant (I know … many of you are secretly cheering!) J
MSUB starts tomorrow so we’re spending the day with busy phones and lobby traffic… the kind of chaos that we all look forward to once we’re through it!
MSUB appears to be quite similar to Western.

1. If a student has a Bachelor’s degree, do you always assume that the Gen Ed are complete? Do you exclude them from the individual courses required to complete the second degree? Do you do a block transfer for the Gen Ed courses?
Yes, if it is from a regionally accredited institution. We do not ‘unwrap’ gen eds; and instead maintain as a package. We still require necessary pre-reqs; and completion of program requirements (ie. an education major would still need US History even if their history was otherwise finished as a gen ed). This does not apply to foreign credentials.
2. What if the 1st degree was prior to the exclusion of D grades for graduation? For example, if a student earned the Bachelor’s degree with Ds in Gen Ed courses, do you grandfather those in even though there was a break in attendance?
Yes.
3. If you assume Gen Ed competency and do not transfer courses individually, how do you handle degrees with higher level math? For example, it seems problematic to allow someone to start in M 273 for an engineering degree by assuming math competency in the first 6 credits of that program.
We require necessary pre-reqs. Not necessarily different from a student who has an elementary ed major and changes to math education… math for elementary ed may satisfy gen eds; but not the program requirements.
4. Do you handle the AA or AS transfers with Gen Ed the same way?
Similar… we don’t grandfather Ds though. Most campuses are in compliance with the BOR policy so this is less and less an issue.
If a student completed a Bachelor’s degree, and had a variety of classes transferred in for that degree, do they have to provide you with all of the original transcripts or do you just say they have completed the gen ed since they have a degree?
We require the transcript that shows the degree. If a student is planning to use credits from other institutions as part of their graduate program; then we also require those.
Also, are you posted the classes that complete their gen ed, just a total amount of credits, or something different?
We simply post the degree/award date/institution. In the situation where credits are actually being ‘pulled forward’ for use in the graduate program; we post all. Happens more often with Second Bachelor’s degrees than Masters.

We require an official transcript for every student, degree or not.
I actually have a question to piggy back on these questions.
If a student completed a Bachelor’s degree, and had a variety of classes transferred in for that degree, do they have to provide you with all of the original transcripts or do you just say they have completed the gen ed since they have a degree?
Also, are you posted the classes that complete their gen ed, just a total amount of credits, or something different?

I sent the questions over to the advising center since they deal with this day to day. Here are their responses.
Hi Leslie,
1. When a student has completed a Bachelor’s degree elsewhere, we consider their Gen Eds complete. There may be degree-specific requirements that they will still need to complete, so review may still be necessary.
2. We still consider the gen eds complete, even with Ds, as long as they have been awarded a bachelor’s degree.
3. The student must still meet the prerequisites for a course. So if the only prereq for M 273 is that they have lower division math, then they are ready to take this math. I see the prereq for M 273 is M 172, and the prereq for that is M 171. So if, when they completed their gen eds, they did not take M 171, then they must take the sequence to be prepared for the class. (I think that is what you are asking) So if there are degree specific requirements, they must still complete those, even if their gen eds are complete.
4. AA and AS degrees are handled the same way. AAS degrees, however, are not. They generally do not have all the gen ed requirements as the AA or AS degrees.
Usually, when a student is coming to UMW for a second degree, it’s for education. That department reviews their transcripts to see what they took, how old it is and what they might need to retake. For instance, the Business Department sees students coming back for our Business & Computer Applications Secondary Ed degree. They will look at the age of the computer courses they took to see if they need to update them. Generally if they are older than 5 years they need to brush up, so they may be required to take repeat courses to bring them up to date.
Does that help?
Let me know if that generates more questions.

Hello, I have some questions about students transferring in with a Bachelor’s degree and the assumption that their Gen Ed core was met.
1. If a student has a Bachelor’s degree, do you always assume that the Gen Ed are complete? Do you exclude them from the individual courses required to complete the second degree? Do you do a block transfer for the Gen Ed courses?
2. What if the 1st degree was prior to the exclusion of D grades for graduation? For example, if a student earned the Bachelor’s degree with Ds in Gen Ed courses, do you grandfather those in even though there was a break in attendance?
3. If you assume Gen Ed competency and do not transfer courses individually, how do you handle degrees with higher level math? For example, it seems problematic to allow someone to start in M 273 for an engineering degree by assuming math competency in the first 6 credits of that program.
4. Do you handle the AA or AS transfers with Gen Ed the same way?
Am I making this too complicated? It just seems like the more I dive into this process, the more questions I have. Thanks for any wisdom you can share!
