Re: Fall 2021 modalities/social distancing plans?

Hi Maria and all,

At Carroll we don't have the classroom space to maintain COVID capacities that allow for social distancing and to go back to nearly all in-person instruction, so for the sake of creating our initial Fall 2021 schedule we are planning for the status quo -- scheduling rooms under their current COVID capacities and keeping faculty who are currently teaching remotely or hybrid as such. We figured that, should circumstances allow us to return to "normal" next fall, it will be easier to increase capacities on rooms and make the moves necessary to slide the remote classes into a room than it will be to have to reduce capacities and completely reconfigure the room schedule like we had to this past summer. That's our current thinking at least!

Best,
Cassie

Dear colleagues,

What directives/plans do you have in place for fall 2021 course scheduling and registration?  Are institutions going back to "pre-COVID" conditions in terms of increasing room capacities?  Will social distancing measurements be relaxed for face-to-face instruction (e.g. 3 feet instead of 6 feet)?  Will "remote" or "hybrid/hyflex" modalities continue or be greatly reduced?  We're curious…

Thanks for any info you can provide.

Re: COVID friendly commencement line up/processional/recessional

Hi Friends,

We have the following protocols in place:

  • We will hold a minimum of two ceremonies to keep attendance to a minimum
  • Tickets are required for entry
  • Families and students will be assigned parking on opposite sides of the stadium to avoid congregating
  • Students can bring a max of 2 guests, no exceptions
  • Students and faculty must RSVP or they cannot participate
  • All seating for students and faculty will be six feet apart
  • No processional- instead, students will be escorted to their seats
  • Each ceremony will be an hour or less
  • No band
  • Mask required, no exceptions
  • Event staff will enforce social distancing and mask wearing
  • Sanitation stations strategically placed around stadium
  • No outside food/drink, no concessions

Hi –

Our current plan (still being finalized/approved) is to have the diploma cover on the student’s chair (and a name card) so they know where to go and sit. No processional. They will get to cross the stage for photo op/reading of name, but will bring up the diploma cover for this opportunity… won’t be shaking hands etc…

Recessional in pockets/pods… different exits (yet TBD).

Hello MACRAO friends!

For those attempting an in-person commencement ceremony this year do you have any thoughts regarding doing a lineup/processional/recessional with COVID restrictions?  Are you going to do any sort of line up/processional/recessional or are you just going to have students go directly to their seat upon arrival?  Currently we are looking at doing four smaller ceremonies over two days in order to allow for some guests.  Most of the details I’ve been able to envision to keep it COVID compliant, but I’m having trouble  envisioning the lineup/processional/recessional with meeting COVID restrictions.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Re: COVID friendly commencement line up/processional/recessional

Hello,

Barring Health Department approval, we are planning more of a graduation walk. The graduates and guests will not be seated. We’re proposing two guests per graduate. They’ll stay together as a pod. The graduate and guests will walk past a small group of faculty, then cross the stage to get their diploma. Their name and program will be read. This is a great opportunity for whomever is joining the graduate to take lots of pictures.

Asking for RSVP so we can coordinate when the graduate’s walk time is. After they RSVP, we’ll email them their time slot, which will be by program.

Hello,

When I’ve done a program name change I do not allow the student to come back and get the new name degree as an additional degree. They are the same degree just different title.  I would allow the student to move catalogs, if they wish, to get the new degree name but not both.

Hello everyone!

I have an interesting question that we received from a student and I’d really like this group’s feedback.

Our BS in Network Technology received a name change for the 2020-2021 academic catalog. It changed from BS in Network Technology to BS in Cybersecurity and Network Admin. In addition to the name change, a few course requirements were updated. So, students on the 2019 catalog an prior will graduate under Network Technology and students on the 2020 catalog forward will receive the new name of Cybersecurity.

A student emailed asking if he could graduate with BS Network Technology, then come back the next semester and finish the requirements for Cybersecurity. He wants both degrees listed on his transcript. I am leaning towards “No” because these are not two separate degrees. The only change is the name and some very minor course requirements. The student would have to choose whether he wants Network Tech or Cybersecurity. It’s a matter of which catalog he wants to use. They’re the same degree, just different names.

Has anyone else ran into this with a program name change? I appreciate any guidance or advice!

Hello,

When I’ve done a program name change I do not allow the student to come back and get the new name degree as an additional degree. They are the same degree just different title.  I would allow the student to move catalogs, if they wish, to get the new degree name but not both.

Best of luck.

Subject: Program name change dilemma!

I agree. We would not allow a student to get both.
