Re: program evaluations

Hi All –

We have explored a few different Degree Works related projects at the system office as useful candidates for some of the OTO dollars available during the pandemic.  While we never found the right funding fit, and pandemic funding opportunities are drying up, I certainly feel this can be a useful area for system and institutional investment.

That is to say, please do keep me and John Thunstrom in the loop as you explore,  so that  we can effectively advocate should new opportunities arise. If we have the right array of use-cases, there may also be a route where we can find co-funding (campus and state) to support uplift of degree works so it can better support transfer students, etc.

Perhaps a good conversation to vet at a future MACRAO monthly call.

Kind Regards,

I have talked with Joe Thiel about implementing Degree Works at DCC. He said there is no help for implementation through the state, but would provide me with language to help get a reduced implementation cost. I believe that CAPP through Ellucian will be phased out over the next few years.

That's helpful, Erin.  @Jaime Ochoa, seeing as though Western and Helena College likely have limited resources for Ellucian consulting and Degree Works implementation, I would recommend kicking this up your institutional hierarchy and looping in Joe Thiel at OCHE.  I've been trying to advocate for Helena College to join us on Degree Works (they rely extensively on our IT support as it is).  If we could bundle Western's needs as well, it will be more efficient.

We attempted to use CAPP when we converted to Banner as a campus in 2010, and gave up – as Tony said, it was very, very, cumbersome. While we made it through most of implementation alright, once we realized the level of work that would need to be done each time any change was made to a course or program (and this was in the midst of larger CCN changes…), we knew it would not be sustainable with our staffing structure and campus resources – our CAO, SAO, Registrar and Student Success Director/Advising Lead (me at the time) were all directly involved in implementation and made the non-continuation decision together.  That said, if it's something you opt to use, I still have lots of notes (though it was Banner 8, not Banner 9).  Depending on your level of Banner support on campus, I would recommend contracting with Ellucian for consulting to get the set up right – we spent funds for this and still opted not to continue, though!

Thanks,

Erin

Hello,

I think the closest thing in banner may be the CAPP(?) system/program.  My understanding is that it can be used for this but I think the limitations of that system are what created the marketplace for degreeworks.  My recollection is that CAPP is incredibly cumbersome to launch and maintain and far from transparent (troubleshooting is particularly challenging).  So while it exists, I am unaware of a campus that deployed it with much success.

Sorry, I am not aware of any way of doing this. We currently use spreadsheets.

Hi Jaime,

Welcome to the MUS!  I'll add you to our monthly affiliate meetings (UM-Western, Montana Tech, Helena College, UM-Missoula).

Other than Degree Works, I am unaware of a robust Banner solution that produces the type of data you seek.  In my academic advising days (pre-Banner), I used spreadsheets to track this type of data.  Maybe UM-Western has a homegrown solution?  I don't know.

@Dellwo, Sarah, do you have any advice for Jaime?

Best regards,

Maria

Good afternoon!

I am new to Banner, and I came from a Colleague school.  I was curious if there was a screen that you all use in Banner that shows student program evaluations, to show missing requirements, whether they are pending, or complete.  I am hoping that there is a back-end way for staff to look at evals.  I have heard that this is what degree-works is used for, but I am specifically curious about the Banner function as we do not have degree-works yet.  Thank you for your help!
