Re: Multiple Department Responsibility for a Major

In Banner, there is only one field/slot to record the department and college on major/programs and courses. I’m wondering if anyone is using other places/forms in Banner to record secondary (or 3rd, or 4th, etc.) college and department codes on courses and majors/program.

We have an interdisciplinary social Science major that is made up of any three of six minors from the History, Philosophy, and Social Science department.  We created a major code for the ISS major and then require students to declare the three minors they are pursuing.  These minors are listed in the minor section of Banner with the major code associated with the ISS major.  We then did some coding with DegreeWorks so that when a student enters the ISS major the minors would appear as their major core.

In short, we enter the ISS major code in the major section and then list the three minors they declare to associate with this major in the minor area of Banner.  I would have to see what Banner page you are working from, but if you are using the curricula pages in SFAREGS or SGASTDN you can list multiple items.  You just have to prioritize them in the priorities field.

Also, if you do have multiple responsible colleges and departments for courses and major/programs, how are you identifying those for the state and institutional data and research offices on campus?

This gets a little complicated.  For the most part we try to only identify one department with each course or major.  However our secondary education program has at least two departments weighing into their majors/minors/options etc.  To track this I have done two steps.  First while there is a standard Education code in Banner, I also created shared codes.  For instance Biology and Secondary Education has a code of EDBI so that when I look at reports so I know that the program influences both departments.  The second item I use when releasing reports related to this data is a department data dictionary, which lists all the programs that are associated with that department.  This way when departments are checking their numbers they have a quick reference to what programs are on record as associated with them.

Hope that helps.

Subject: Multiple Department Responsibility for a Major

Hello Everyone,

I hope your having a great Tuesday.

I have a question regarding interdisciplinary majors/programs and how you record those in Banner.

In Banner, there is only one field/slot to record the department and college on major/programs and courses. I’m wondering if anyone is using other places/forms in Banner to record secondary (or 3rd, or 4th, etc.) college and department codes on courses and majors/program.

Also, if you do have multiple responsible colleges and departments for courses and major/programs, how are you identifying those for the state and institutional data and research offices on campus?

Thanks!
