I haven’t heard of a specific part “hardship appeal” in relation to residency, though we’ve done our best to help students who came to Montana in a difficult situation (like escaping abuse) to come up with supplementary documentation when necessary.  At UM, our campus appeal committee may grant approval in close cases where it’s just a judgement call, but if someone flat-out doesn’t meet the policy, they would need to pursue an appeal past the committee to OCHE.  Depending on the situation, I would think a case for hardship could be made to the Commissioner in an appeal, but I would consult with Helen Thigpen or Viv Hammill on the person’s specific situation for their guidance.

Good luck!

Has anyone ever heard of a hardship appeal in regards to the residency policy?  I don’t think there is one but thought I would ask the experts out there before I called the parent back.
