Hi Charity, Montana Tech doesn’t have doesn’t have much more insight to share but this question and the replies from others led to good discussion with our FA team.  I just want to add that this is an excellent example of how valuable this listserv is to me and my ability to stay on top of important topics.

I took online classes and these were some methods we used: 

Discussion Boards, instructor gives out discussion points and all participants must log in so many times over the week.

Online face-time

Voice thread conversations: instructor posts their discussion and what he/she wants and all students must prepare and record their response and post on Voice Thread

Blackboard discussions with instructor

Helena College views the attendance as participation not just logging in. We use starfish to track it. We have a special flag for online participation, if a student has not participated, instructors can raise the flags to notify the financial aid office.

My recollection from our Federal Review was demonstrated “regular and substantive interaction” (ie. quiz, test, chats).  Logging in doesn’t count.

Course syllabi should be explicit about the expectations and interactions.
