Not all departments at Montana Tech use registration pins. The advisors that do use them give the pin to the student when they meet for an advising appointment. Their rationale is that once the student and advisor speak, it is up to the student to make responsible choices based on that conversation.
All registration outside those departments is done by the advisor in self-service or with an advisor’s signature on an add/drop card that comes to Enrollment Services. There are basically no exceptions. We require advisor approval on all additions or deletions if the student doesn’t have a registration pin.

Subject: Requiring advisors signatures and pins at registration?
A questions has come up from a few of our faculty regarding if advisors signatures/pins are really needed for registration. I was curious if all of you require students to meet with an advisor and receive either a signature or a registration pin (for online registration) prior to registration? If you do require signature or pins, are there any exceptions?
Thanks for any information you are willing to share.
Have a great week
