Vets Residency

The President signed into the law the Veterans Reform Bill which included some language that affects residency for veterans. I’m sure we’ll hear more about this in the coming months. Any thoughts?

 

(Sec. 702) Directs the Secretary to disapprove, for purposes of the All-Volunteer Force and the Post-9/11 Educational Assistance programs, courses of education provided by a public educational institution of higher education (IHE) that charges veterans living in the state higher tuition and fees than it charges in-state residents, regardless of the veteran's state of residence. Makes this provision applicable to: (1) veterans who were discharged or released from at least 90 days of active service less than three years before their date of enrollment in the applicable course, (2) family members eligible for such assistance due to their relationship to such veterans, and (3) courses that commence on or after July 1, 2015.

Most of our agreements are to accept a two-year degree from another state.    We post the degree with a notation that lower-division general ed has been met.

If it’s just course-to-course articulation, we do not make any comment in Banner.

We actually list the date on the academic calendar, then everyone says the same date.  We do work those graduation applications that are pending transcripts or board/certifications first so those can go out before diplomas.  

Our academic calendar is adjusted based on the term. For instance it takes much long to post spring diplomas just due to volume.  The academic calendar link can be found at:  http://www.gfcmsu.edu/academics/AcademicCalendar.html

It takes approximately one week after the semester ends to have all grades entered.  Takes about another week to 10 days to audit final semester requirements;  once audit is complete diplomas are mailed with all diplomas generally out about 2/3 weeks after audit is completed.

We generally tell students 6-8 weeks after grading is complete.

I am calling on you for your help. 

 

As you may already know, via the Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education, we are hosting a statewide Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) Summit in Helena on Monday, September 29.  The summit will include a welcome from Lt. Governor McLain, will feature presenters from Tennessee and Ohio who will speak of their statewide PLA efforts, and will include an update on what we're doing in Montana. 

 

One additional aspect we want to include is a student panel.  This is where I am seeking your help.  Can you let me know if you have any students who are currently in, or recently graduated from your campus  - and who earned PLA credit?  As you know, the PLA credit could have been earned via avenues such as ACE , NCCRS, CLEP, DSST, UExcel, standardized tests, challenge exams, or portfolio assessment.

 

We would like to have approximately three students on our panel to talk about their PLA experience and impact.  If you could please send me the student's name and contact information, I would be happy to discuss with him/her.  We would be prepared to pay this person's travel and meals.
