Subject: Review Requested - Guide for High School For College Credit

Good Morning!

As some of you may know, the Two-year and Community College Division at the Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education has been in the process of updating the Dual Enrollment Guidelines for the past few months.  Some of you have served on several committees drafting new documents for Board of Regents review, including both the Dual Enrollment Guidelines and  High School for College Credit Guidelines.

During review of the old Dual Enrollment Guidelines, it was determined by the Task Force that a separate document, giving attention to articulation and the various ways to earn High School for College Credit in Montana should be created, so as not to create confusion between dual enrollment and the various types of High School for College Credit.  The attached document is the current version of the Draft High School For College Credit Guidelines.

The  draft version includes a sample articulation agreement, which is meant to be tailored between each high school and college for their individual situations.  In this sample, there is a section on Transcripting credit.  During our previous meetings, there have been discussions around this process.  Mainly, the discussion has centered around two main points:

·         Should the transcription process be uniform?  It would benefit students if there was one process used by all campuses so that students would not be in danger of “losing” the credit and falling through the cracks (Example: many students forget they have articulated credit, forget to ask for transcription, etc.)

·         Should each campus use their own process for transcription? This would most likely be easier for college staff, but would it ensure that the credit follows the student to college?

At this time, we would like to invite you to review the document and related sample articulation agreement to gather your expertise on the matter of High School for College Credit and transcription.  Please review the document, adding comments and edits with track changes by December 9th.  Depending on responses, we may schedule a follow up meeting to go over comments and suggestions.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to give me a call.  I would be more than happy to visit.  I am also attaching a copy of the latest DRAFT version of the Dual Enrollment Guidelines, so you can see what this document covers.  If you have any questions regarding the Dual Enrollment Guidelines, feel free to contact Sue Jones at sjones@montana.edu.

Thanks!

Kali

Re: Grading policy and GPA calculation

Hi all,

Carroll College’s grading policy is below. Our faculty is also exploring the possibility of a revised scheme, one that incorporates a +/- system and perhaps some additional changes to policies regarding our other grades. Should be an interesting discussion!

Best,

Cassie

Interpretation of Letter Grades

The grading system in use is an alphabetical system using the letters A, B, C, D, F, I, P, W, NR and AU. Grades are interpreted as follows:

A indicates excellence of performance in every aspect of the course

B indicates a better than satisfactory but less than excellent performance in every aspect of the course

C indicates a satisfactory performance in every aspect of the course

D indicates a less than satisfactory performance in some or all aspects of the course

F indicates serious deficiencies in some or all aspects of the course

I is given only under unusual circumstances which cause a delay in a student’s completion of a course. The student must be doing passing work before an “I“ (Incomplete) may be given. The student must make specific arrangements including completion date (no later than the end of the following semester) with the faculty member for the completion of the course. A formal written Request for Grade of Incomplete must be filed in the Office of the Registrar before the assignment of the grade as incomplete

P pass–indicates the requirements for a letter grade of “D” or higher have been met.

W withdrawal

NR not reported

AU audit student—no credit or grade.

Grade Points and Academic Average

A student’s cumulative grade point average (GPA) is calculated by using only those grades earned at Carroll. A student’s GPA average is determined by dividing the total number of grade points received by the total number of graded attempted credits. In computing this average, the following points are assigned each grade: “A,” 4 grade points per credit; “B,” 3 grade points per credit; “C,” 2 grade points per credit; “D,” one grade point per credit; and “F,” no grade points. Neither the notation “W” nor the grade “P” is computed when calculating the grade point average of a student.
