I am looking for some feedback on grading and grading policy for varsity sports.

  1. Do you use pass/fail or a standard grading scale?

We use pass/fail for our course.

  1. What is the rationale for the grading choice?

Athletics has selected this grading mode for the course.

  1. Are students allowed to use the varsity sport in the total number of credits needed for a degree? For example, an associate's degree requires 60 credits. Can four (4) of the credits be varsity sport? These credits generally do not transfer and now the student is 4 credits short of being a junior at the transfer college.

Our students can only repeat this course three times (1 credit each time) and we count it towards their overall 120 credit amount. If they receive a P it doesn't count in their GPA but if they receive an F it does count in their GPA.

Thank you for your feedback,

Re: Varsity Sports

Hi Virginia,

This is what UM does:

ACTV 189 - Varsity Athletics. 1 Credit.

(R-4) Offered every term. Students may include up to but not more than 4 credits earned in ACT/ACTV/HHP 100-299 or MART 100/189 activity courses in the total number of credits required for graduation. Students graded Credit/No Credit based on participation and a strict attendance policy. For a complete list of all classes offered go to the HHP Activity Program website.

I don’t know what the rationale is for that choice, but it is consistent with all of our other activity courses (ACT/HHP).

I hope that helps!

-Dawn
