Re: Honorary Bachelor Degree?
Thanks to everyone who replied today. It was very helpful. I’ve handled this situation in the private setting, but wasn’t sure what the approach was in the public MUS system! Your guidance was greatly appreciated!

We don’t so much do honorary, but have done posthumous… which is then noted on the transcript.

Last one I recall was an adult student and her children actually walked in commencement on her behalf – it was pretty moving and meant a great deal to the family.

Subject: Honorary Bachelor Degree?
So I have a fun one to figure out (hopefully with your help!)
Last year one of our students passed away in a car accident. He was very involved with the University and would have graduated in the upcoming Spring 2017 ceremony; as such the parents are hoping an honorary bachelor’s degree could be awarded at the ceremony in his honor.
Has anyone in the MUS system ever awarded an honorary bachelor degree and what steps did you go through to have it approved. I’ve looked on the MUS website and find information about UM and MSU being able to award honorary doctorates, but nothing about the affiliates or situations like this one. Anyone have experience with this type of situation and would be willing to share? Your thoughts are appreciated.

Re: Honorary Bachelor Degree?
We also let family receive the degree at Commencement. We have even had a father go through the Ph.D. hooding ceremony as a memorial to his son.

We offer a posthumous degree in these situations (honorary has some specific connotations and processes on our campus and usually reserved for what is essentially prior learning assessment at the doctoral level). For a posthumous degree we require that the student completed 2/3 of the total credits required for the credential. It gets submitted by the department approved by the provost and presented to the faculty senate when we present our honorary and other candidates for their approval.
We also allow a family member to receive the degree on the students behalf.

Re: Honorary Bachelor Degree?
At Blackfeet Community College, the Registrar approves the posthumous degree. The request is then approved by the Vice President and President.
