Call for Session Proposals: PACRAO’s 88th Annual Meeting

Don’t forget!

Session Proposals due March 15

Here are some great areas to think about that would make great PACRAO sessions.

What does your office or team do well?

Share your accomplishments with your peers in our profession.

Why are you the “go to” person?

What new projects are you championing on campus or in your office?

What presentations are already in your portfolio?

November 9-12, 2014

Hilton Portland & Executive Tower

Portland, Oregon

Proposal Deadline: March 15, 2014

Submit a session proposal

Our theme for this year’s conference is “Keep PACRAO Wired.”  It’s a play on Portland’s unofficial slogan to “Keep Portland Weird.”  Portlanders drink a lot of coffee and stay wired (in an easy going, laid back way).  They’re creative, connected and not afraid to try new cutting edge and edgy ideas.  In that same vein, the PACRAO Annual Meeting is an excellent opportunity for you to share your creative ideas and best practices from your campus with others.  We invite you to submit a workshop or session proposal that illustrates innovative and practical steps you have taken to improve higher education in our region.

Suggested Topics:

Credit for prior learning

Outcome based transcripts

College rankings

Working with international agents/partners

International and other joint degrees

The national landscape for higher education and how it is affecting our institutions

Student demographics

Soft skills for managers/supervisors: connecting with staff to increase engagement and productivity

Serving veterans

New demands for accountability and disclosure in higher education

Emerging technologies

New international trends

Transforming data into information

Institution wide enrollment management

Crisis communication

Relationships with state, federal, and accrediting agencies

Transferability between institutions and course articulation

Admission trends

Best practices for admissions processing

Business processes design/redesign

Financial aid: collaboration with our enrollment management partners

CRM/Communication planning

Small college issues

Graduate school issues

Workshop ideas

Your innovative ideas

Submit a session proposal

Proposal Deadline: March 15, 2014 – Don’t Delay

Guidelines for Submission:

As PACRAO’s annual meeting represents many facets of several professions, the following guidelines are offered to ensure presentations are of the highest quality and are applicable to a broad audience:

Generalized

Presents multiple viewpoints

Multiple institutions and types represented

Draws from theory

Grounded in research

Relevant (hot topics list)

Practical applications to the profession

Assessment data, reports, tools, or trend data included as appropriate to assist in broad use (with institution disguised if necessary)

Exhibitor Presentations:

Exhibitor information will be made available in mid-March.  Questions regarding exhibitor presentations should be directed to our Business Partner Liaison, Ann Gillen (agillen@pacific.edu).

Re: Military Students

1. At Rocky Mountain College we do not have a leave of absence policy nor do we specifically address military obligations. However it does state in our catalog that excused absences may be granted by the academic vice president.

2. Last semester we has some students in the Army National Guard whom were called out to fight fires. They were granted excused absence with official documentation from the military.  With an excused absence like this faculty then worked with those students to get them caught up once they were back on campus. However, in the event that a student would have missed too much coursework to be successful they are granted a drop for those courses.

3. I'm unaware of any regulations regarding this.

Hello all,

1)      Does your absence policy specifically address military obligations?  Our policy (below) does not specifically address absences due to military obligations.

It is Montana Tech policy that faculty should make reasonable accommodation for students to make-up work missed (or the equivalent) because of an excused absence. Students expecting to incur excused absences should consult with their instructors early in the term to be sure that they understand the absence policies for each of their courses. Excused absences include official Montana Tech events or activities, or personal matters deemed appropriate by the instructor.

Official Montana Tech Events or activities for the purposes of "excused absence":

NAIA sanctioned sporting events
Academic Team competitions (i.e., concrete canoe, steel bridge, human powered vehicle, ethics bowl, environmental design, etc.)
Travel for professional meetings related to major
Class field trips
Others as approved by the Chancellor

2)      How does your campus deal with extended absences due to military obligations?  For example, we have National Guard students that are required to participate in a military exercise for two weeks during the semester.  Does your campus require faculty to provide special accommodations for these students, or are the students just expected to make up the missed work on their own?

3)      Are you aware of any regulations that state that we are required to make special accommodations for students that miss school due to military obligations?

Re: Late Registration Fees??

We are charging it during the first week of classes. We do allow students to register during the first week, even if they have not done so before the semester, but they do have to pay the $40 registration fee.

Hi Folks,

I have a question regarding MUS core.   Do you allow new students who not transferring from another campus (i.e., freshman, etc.) to complete the MUS core instead of your campus’s general ed?

The question has come up here and I would like to hear your interpretation of the BOR policy.

Thanks!
